Liposuction
Plymouth Plastic Surgery Specialist - Dr. Moss
Liposuction is best performed to remove local collections of fat. Liposuction is not a replacement for losing weight. The most common areas that Dr. Moss treats are the hips, thighs, back, and abdomen. Dr. Moss also performs liposuction of the neck and jowls quite frequently. During the consultation, Dr. Moss will focus and identify with the patient the areas that are most bothersome. The better the skin tone, the better a patient is a candidate for liposuction. Although Dr. Moss does perform liposuction on women in their 40's and 50's, generally the younger the patient, the better her skin tone, and therefore the better her result will be. This is especially true of areas such as the abdomen and inner and outer thighs, which are more prone to sag than areas such as the hips and back, which tend to be less prone to skin sag.
Liposuction of the Body
When Dr. Moss performs liposuction on the body, the patient is under general anesthesia (you're asleep). Unless the patient is having another procedure requiring an overnight (such as an abdominoplasty), you go home the same day. It is not painful, and most patients, partially depending on the extent of the surgery, describe the discomfort as moderate and well controlled with pain medication. Dr. Moss recommends patients take off two weeks from work for body liposuction. You do have to wear a compression garment (Dr. Moss provides these for you) or a binder (depending on the location of the liposuction) for about three weeks. It is important to understand that the final medical result will not be complete until 6 months from the time of surgery.
Liposuction of the Abdomen
Liposuction of the abdomen is a very different procedure when compared to an abdominoplasty. Liposuction is the surgical removal of localized fat deposits in the abdomen. It does not remove any excess skin at all. Traditional liposuction involves suctioning out localized fat deposits, through a cannulae (narrow hollowed out metal shaft). These fat deposits should be disproportionately large in an otherwise balanced figure. It is important that the patient have firm abdominal skin and good muscle tone.
Liposuction of the abdomen does not reduce or eliminate stretch marks on the abdomen. If an abdominoplasty patient has stretch marks on her abdomen and they happen to be in the area that Dr. Moss removes, then the patient receives a secondary benefit from the abdominoplasty.
Liposuction of the abdomen surgery does not usually result in much post-operative discomfort, although Dr. Moss will still provide these patients with a strong narcotic post-operatively. Dr. Moss requires that all liposuction of the abdomen patients take two weeks off from work.
