A breastlift or mastopexy is performed to lift sagging breasts. The procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). Conditions that can cause sagging breasts include repeated breast feeding, major weight loss, very large breasts, and finally just the natural effects of time.
Breastlift surgery varies considerably in extent. It can be small enough to be performed under local anesthesia (Novocain like numbing medication) as an office procedure, or it can require general anesthesia (you're asleep) in a hospital. Even when general anesthesia is required, most patients go home the same day. Similarly, the amount of time off from work varies from a day or two to as much as two weeks. The degree of discomfort is not great, even in the larger cases, and is well controlled with oral medications.
When the surgery is done, by its nature, does require some scars to be placed on the breasts. The scars can be limited to just the periphery of the areola or it can be more extensive, involving not only the areola, but also require both vertical and horizontal incisions. Although the quality of the scars is not under a cosmetic surgeon's control, they are placed for minimal visibility. When large breasts are lifted, this usually requires a reduction in the size of the breasts. Finally, the lift effect is not permanent; all breasts will sag with time.
